Driving Local Search Performance for Volvo Cars UK

How eComOne Built a Local SEO Strategy for the Dealership Network

Executive Summary

Volvo Cars UK is the UK arm of the Swedish premium automotive manufacturer, sold and serviced through a nationwide network of franchised dealerships. As Volvo accelerates its electrified line-up and pushes toward its long-stated ambition for the majority of sales to be electrified by the end of the decade, competition for both national and local search visibility across its dealer network has intensified.

Volvo Cars UK’s dealership pages were underperforming for local, location-based searches, limiting each dealership’s ability to be found by nearby, ready-to-buy customers. Volvo wanted expert guidance on how to strengthen local SEO performance across the network and, increasingly, how to remain visible as more locational and activity-based search shifts from Google into AI chat assistants such as ChatGPT and Claude.

eComOne delivered a one-off strategic engagement: a dedicated strategy and teaching session with Volvo’s SEO team, covering local SEO, technical SEO, Google Business Profile optimisation, on-page content, and site structure, equipping the team to implement a proven local SEO strategy independently.

1:1 Dedicated Strategy Session 5+ SEO Disciplines Covered 100% Actionable Takeaways

Volvo Cars is a Swedish premium automotive manufacturer with a long-standing reputation for safety-led design, and a UK retail network of franchised dealerships selling and servicing its range of SUVs, saloons, and estates. Electrification at the core: Volvo has committed to an increasingly electrified line-up, with electrified models, fully electric and plug-in hybrid, now representing a substantial and growing share of UK sales as new models such as the EX30, EX60, and EX90 come to market.

Nationwide dealership network: Volvo is represented in the UK through a network of franchised retailer groups and independent dealerships spread across the country, each responsible for local sales, servicing, and customer experience under the Volvo brand.

eComOne worked directly with Volvo’s central SEO team, rather than with individual dealership marketing teams, reflecting the network-wide nature of the local SEO challenge.

As electric vehicle adoption grows and more car buyers research locally before purchasing, dealership-level search visibility has become increasingly commercially important. At the same time, the rise of AI-powered search and chat assistants is changing how consumers discover local businesses and services, adding a new dimension to how manufacturers like Volvo need to think about local and regional search visibility.

Volvo Cars UK’s individual dealership pages were underperforming for local, location-based search terms, the kinds of searches used by customers actively looking for a Volvo dealership near them. For a network business, this represents a significant missed opportunity: national brand visibility means little if it doesn’t translate into visibility for someone searching “Volvo dealership [insert town]” or “Volvo servicing near me.”

Volvo’s objectives going into the engagement were:

  1. Optimise each local dealership page to perform stronger for local, location-based searches.
  2. Understand how to leverage Google Business Profile (GBP) to strengthen local visibility.
  3. Build internal knowledge of local SEO best practice across the SEO team, not just a one-off fix.
  4. Understand how local and locational search behaviour is evolving with the rise of AI search tools such as ChatGPT and Claude.

This mattered commercially: local dealership visibility directly influences showroom footfall, service bookings, and ultimately vehicle sales at the dealership level and with more consumers now researching local activities and services directly inside AI chat assistants, the risk of losing visibility in these newer channels made the timing of the project increasingly important.

eComOne delivered this as a one-off strategic and educational engagement, a focused session designed to leave Volvo’s SEO team equipped to run local SEO improvements themselves, rather than an ongoing managed service.

Data & Discovery

  • Reviewed Volvo’s existing dealership page structure and how individual locations were currently represented on the website.
  • Identified where the technical setup of dealership pages was limiting local search performance and indexability.

Strategy

  • Local SEO fundamentals: how to optimise each individual dealership page to rank for location-based keywords, page titles, on-page content, structured data, and location-specific signals.
  • Google Business Profile (GBP): how to leverage GBP listings to strengthen local visibility, and how a well-optimised GBP presence feeds into AI-driven search visibility as well as traditional Google results.
  • On-page optimisation: FAQs, blogs and guides, supporting content, and internal linking structured to build topical and local relevance for each dealership.
  • Local community presence: using local events and location-specific content to build genuine local authority, increasingly important as more locational searches move into conversational AI tools.

Execution & Innovation

  • Walked through real-world examples of local page structures done well and poorly across the automotive retail sector, to ground the strategy in tangible best practice rather than theory alone.
  • Highlighted a critical technical distinction: using a filter page to represent each dealership location (e.g. a stock filter by location) means that location can’t be indexed or built up individually, it can’t accrue authority or rank for local keywords in its own right. Instead, each dealership should have its own static, indexable page, giving full control and optimisation opportunities for that location’s local keywords.
  • AI and LLM optimisation: a briefing on how content should evolve to appear in AI-generated answers, targeting longer-tail, more conversational keywords and building both regional and hyper-local topical authority, rather than optimising purely for traditional Google rankings.

Implementation complexity: the right technical fix isn’t always the easiest one to maintain. Moving from filter-based location pages to individual static pages solves the indexability and ranking problem, but introduces an ongoing maintenance overhead, each dealership’s stock and page content then needs to be kept up to date manually and separately, rather than being pulled automatically from a shared filter.

eComOne was transparent about this trade-off, so Volvo’s team could weigh the SEO upside against the operational reality of their own site build and internal processes before committing to implementation.

  • As a strategic and educational engagement, success here is measured in capability transferred to Volvo’s team, not in campaign performance metrics:
    • A dedicated strategy session with Volvo’s SEO team, walking through the local SEO opportunity and a clear plan of action.
    • A structured teaching session covering local SEO, technical SEO, backlinks, on-page SEO practices, site structure, and Core Web Vitals.
    • The team left with the confidence and practical knowledge to implement a proven local SEO strategy across the dealership network themselves.

After meeting our team at an event, Volvo decided to work with eComOne as their performance partner due to their specialist automotive and eCommerce SEO expertise. eComOne’s experience across automotive retail and complex, multi-location website structures meant Volvo’s team could draw on lessons learned across the wider sector, not just generic SEO advice.

We have a practical and honest approach. Rather than simply auditing Volvo’s site and listing what was wrong, eComOne used real-world comparisons from across the industry to make recommendations land constructively, and was candid about the maintenance trade-offs of the recommended technical approach.

Forward-looking perspective: eComOne’s briefing on AI and LLM search optimisation gave Volvo’s team visibility of a rapidly emerging channel most competitors have yet to plan for, positioning the dealership network for how local search behaviour is likely to evolve.

eComOne is following up directly with the team at Volvo to support implementation of the recommended local SEO strategy across the dealership network. As Volvo’s electrified range continues to expand and local, in-person research remains a key part of the car-buying journey, there is a clear opportunity to build on this initial strategy session, helping Volvo’s dealership pages, and their emerging AI search presence, continue to strengthen as the network puts the plan into action.
